My first day running and promoting my own blog.  I feel like a slow kindergartener in the fast-paced, adult world of social media.  When I came up with the idea for the blog–actually my amazing and lovely wife came up with the idea to blog about my adventures, and I give her complete and total credit, as per her instructions to do so–I had no idea how to create or promote a blog.  But fortunately I have some amazing friends with a wide variety of talents.  (If you follow the blog–and you better–because it would be so, so sad if only my mother, wife, and others similarly obligated by familial connection or fear of my repetitive threats to cut them read this–I will blog about my friends and some of the things they teach me.  Learning how to drive stick shift on Day 4 with Josh and Aric!)

Anyhoo, I immediately called up the power-blogging couple of Adam Holzband and Jodi Bart.  Adam provides Internet and social media consulting and can be contacted at adamholz@gmail.com.  Jodi has an amazing local food blog called Tasty Touring, which you should check out.  (Note: I will be doing a joint activity with Tasty Touring as we try and live off of grocery store samples for an entire day.  Stay tuned.)  They came over on Saturday to help me start this blog.  Adam helped with the technical aspects–getting me set up on WordPress, registering a domain, doing something with some program called feedburner (I still have no idea what that is).  Then began my twitter 101 lesson with Jodi.  Apparently, it’s all about twitter.  Who knew?  Essentially, I just sat there while Adam and Jodi did the majority of the work, barked orders at me, slapped me around like a red-headed stepchild, and every so often, after a detailed set of instructions, I would say “Do what now?”  (Best three words in the english language, preferably said after a very long and very detailed set of instructions.  Do.  What.  Now?)

My first day has kind of been a whirlwind.  Lots of sitting in front of the computer waiting for people to make comments (including wondering why my own mother hasn’t made one yet), sending annoying messages to all my friends to read my blog dammit, and generally crying into my stuffed hippo, Lenny, while I struggle to try and think of funny things to write about.  Oh, and I rented an Elvis outfit for tomorrow–just to run some errands.  Why am I doing this again?

  1. This is marvelous. I may have to copy it when I next switch jobs.

Spend a whole day without your car exploring Austin by bus.

  2. nice work David! I’ll be following :)

  3. I’m crying of laughter about your rambling and Lenny. Thanks for the shout out on your blog roll! Can’t wait to see what unexpected turns you take!

  4. This is great. I can’t wait to see you tomorrow as Elvis. Have you given much thought to doing yoga in the costume? Also, I like Larry’s idea of riding the bus for a day…especially when you have a LOT of errands to do.

  5. If you are going to live off samples, I suggest you time it with the free beer samples at Beer Alley at whole foods!

  6. As an associate at a large national firm, I totally take offense at your characterization of the job! I have plenty of time for hobbies, like . . . well . . . I’m sure I can think something . . . I like to catch up on case developments in the news! Oh wait, that’s not really a “hobby” . . .

  7. Loving the blog David. Good luck.

  8. You’re right, it IS all about twitter. Thats where i found you. You had me at the hippo. I’m signing up! So glad I made it on day four instead of day 40! Good luck and have fun.
