About

Picture 338The Setup: My name is David Becker. I’m 31 years old. I have a wife, and dog, and no children. I have a little more than forty days until I start as an associate at a big international law firm. I can kiss goodbye to a substantial portion of my free time, extracurricular activities, personal hobbies, perhaps even a good amount of my exercise regimen of running and yoga, and I can say hello to long hours, late nights, and lots and lots of thinking, researching, and writing about the law. But I have these forty days.

The Challenge: I have forty days to do all the things I won’t have a chance to do when I start my upcoming job. I am challenging myself to do something new, something interesting, something I’ve always wanted to do, or something completely ridiculous every day for the next forty days. I am absolutely open to reader suggestions for activities, unless it involves self-mutilation, screaming at inanimate objects or very small children, illegal activity, aggravating a tiger in close proximity, or generally anything I wouldn’t want my Nana to read about on this blog (because I wholeheartedly expect my Nana to find a way to read this blog, even though she has never in her life owned a computer.)

The Rules: Every day for forty days, I must do something new, interesting, or unique, something completely absurd, or something I’ve always wanted to do but never had the time, motivation, or cojones to do.  Not included in the forty-day time period are two days for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (because I am a good, good Jewish boy).

So forty days . . . Moses spent forty days and forty nights on Mount Sinai. Jesus spent forty days fasting in the desert after his baptism. The Israelites wandered in the desert for forty years before finding the Promised Land. According to WikiAnswers (which, as everyone knows, contains the answers to all of life’s pressing questions), “A 40-something time period [in the Bible], whether days, months, or years is always a period of testing, trial, probation, or chastisement (but not judgment) and ends with a period of restoration, revival or renewal.” What will these forty days have in store for me?

  1. Hi David,

This is very comical!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.But if you really wanted to be Elvis you could have shaved your beard. And I can’t believe you were excited about a beef sandwich, boy ,have things changed so much for bagels and pizza!

Your ultimate test would be to spend a week with Nana! then you would be ready for your exciting job.

    Enjoy! Love you, cheryl

  2. So the question is will it be harder to take care of Nana or MJ ? At least with Nana there are no diapers. Yes parenthood is fun but it is a lifelong experience. So think wisely and enjoy yourself now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Hi David:

Love reading about your Forty Days. Ever think of going up on a trapeze and being caught in the air by someone else, like Carrie did in “Sex In the City”?

  4. I have thought about a trapeze lesson. Just wait . . . There are many more days to come.

  5. Bravo!!!!!!!!!! You were quite good on the trapeze. I heard Ringley Brothers has a opening for a new artist, so just in case the law job doesn’t work out the circus is always another alternative! Enjoy because I’m enjoying reading about your adventures.

  6. What about BIg Lebowski Day? Include such things as wearing a bathrobe whereever you go and drinking white russians. You can fill in the rest.

Or you could go with bungee jumping?

Finally, what about trying a homeless day? See what it is really like without cheating (no money, no shelter, etc.)

  7. You’ve done trapeze…you should try aerial silks! It’s where people climb up fabric and use the fabric in various ways to get in to different poses. It is addicting, and will add to your circus skills ;) Blue Lapis Light has private lessons available. So fun!

  8. I just caught up on your 40 days. I love the day with your Nana. I agree with all you said about her. I miss your mom and dad living in Memphis and not getting to see your Nana. Please give her my best. What a great lady!!!!!
You must find another adventure to blog about after you start your career. What will I have to look forward to if I do not have your adventures to read?
    Have fun!!!!’
